I was born in the coastal town of Irvine in Ayrshire, sw Scotland on the 26 November 1953. My parents were from farming and mining backgrounds and I lived on a farm though my early years.
I had a natural ability to play piano from very young age and started piano lessons when I was seven.
The sixties was a great time musically and pirate radio, radio Scotland and Caroline (North) opened everything up by playing all the new British and American stuff and my early influences were The Beatles, The Stones, Stax and Atlantic Soul.
When I was eleven, I played in the school rock band "Timor Mortis" playing Deep Purple, Cream and Black Sabbath covers etc.
Later formed a gigging band playing clubs and pubs. And was lucky enough to see some great bands at the Glasgow Apollo such as Traffic, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Cream, Yes, Ten Years After, and Family.
I fondly remember the Saturday lunchtime jazz sessions at the Crazy Daisy in Glasgow with free pie and peas. Wonderful!
After obtaining D.R.S.A.M. qualifications at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow 1972-75 I felt the need to spread my wings and moved down to London where I played with the house band at the Hammersmith Palais. |

Visit Ian's own Website Here | | In 1994/95 I composed, recorded and co-produced my solo album "Count The Waves" at Pelican Studios with Ray Stiles. Guesting were Tony Hicks and Alan Coates along with Alan's wife, Kim Goody.
Later in the nineties I composed and recorded "Celtic" a production album with Ray Stiles and Damien Jory for Extreme Music.
In 2004 I composed and recorded music for "Dominatrix Revisited" series on Granada for the Men and motors programme.
My musical taste very quite widely from - Amon Tobin, Nitin Sawhney, Boards of Canada, which is ambient music, chilled and a bit trancy but I also like the Beastie Boys.
Singers I love are KD Lang, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell and Steve Tyrell.
I also like smooth jazz like Joyce Cooling and Will Downing and modern classical composers like Lutoslawski, Penderecki, Debussy, Ravel and Wagner.
So, you can see that my influences are many and varied coming from all forms of music from Classical to Punk, from Jazz to Rap.
