Carl Wayne  1943-2004

The tributes below are taken from The Hollies Guestbook,
Hollies Forum and individual emails I have received.

This was very bad news. Carl has been doing a wonderful job for the Hollies, since Allan resigned. We are all sad now, because he meant so much for us, both as an artist and a great person. He is leaving behind good memories from concerts and conventions. Thank you, Carl.

Absolutely devastated about Carl's death. He was a fab replacement to Allan. Saw him in Hayes in Feb, but also saw him in Blood Brothers years before that! he had immense stage presence. Loved him. Absolutely devastated that we will not see him on stage again. Thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sue, and his son, Jack. Lots of love, Fiona and David x x x

Just as Mikael Rickfors did when he replaced Allan Clarke in 1972, Carl Wayne brought a new dimension to the band. I thought "How Do I Survive" was a terrific track as soon as I heard it. A Hollies classic, in my opinion. And Carl's work with The Move was superb as well. Imagine, he fronted two of the greatest UK bands of all time. Thank you, Carl Wayne. RIP.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Carl Wayne. A lovely man who I had the privilege to meet at the Sunderland Empire. He brought a new dimension to The Hollies when he took over from Allan Clark, he had a powerful voice and great stage presence. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Rest well big man.

We were so shocked and upset to hear about Carl. We have been fans of The Hollies since day one and Carl was a fantastic replacement for Alan. We have been to concerts at The Regent in Stoke-on-Trent and already have tickets for the next one in November - hope it takes place as a tribute to Carl. Our thoughts are with Carl's family at this very sad time but we hope they take great comfort in the pleasure and delight he gave to everyone. His performances were superb!!

I am deeply shocked to hear of the loss of Carl, a brave man who soldiered on in spite of the illness he was suffering from. I am only 30 but have been a fan of the Hollies for a long time. I was fortunate enough to see them in 2003 in Guildford and in 2004 in Aldershot. I also had tickets for the November Bournemouth concert. My mother saw the Hollies several times in the 1960's but said they were better now than they were then. A sad loss to the music industry. Our wishes are with his family.

It was a tremendous shock when I heard Johnny Walker on Radio 2 mention Carl Wayne. It took a long time to sink in and I just could not believe what I was hearing! Please pass on my sincere sympathy to his wife Susan and son Jack, and also to The Hollies. Carl had become such a close member of The Hollies and was an immense asset to the Hollies' sound. My Hollies photos are all around my house and Carl will be sadly missed by all my family and friends who thoroughly enjoy the Hollies in concert.

I remember Carl when he was in The Move, he was the handsome one, then in the early 70,s he married "Miss Diane" out of Crossroads, then when Alan Clarke decided to retire it was with great excitement that Carl joined where he re-launched the sound of the Hollies and brought some of his old songs from The Move. I took my daughter Gemma to see him in Blood Brothers where he played the narrator which he was brilliant at, he was a much underrated artist, god bless you Carl.

Eddie Gray, Musical Director/arranger. I knew Charlie for many, many years, right from the Birmingham days. I did a considerable number of arrangements for him and worked with him, both live and on TV, on many occasions. I only met Sue once, while delivering some extremely last minute arrangements to him at Corley services on the M6! He was a great bloke and a very underrated session singer. PLEASE pass my condolences to Sue. I have been retired with cancer myself so it's quite some time since I saw him, but just as a friend I know I will miss the fact that he is no longer around.

When I came home from work this afternoon and found out about Carl I was to say the least stunned and shocked. I went with my wife Susan to see The Hollies with Carl in 2001 and at the time we didn't even know who he was but we thought that he was fantastic and a perfect replacement for Allan Clarke. My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife, son and the Wayne family and may you rest in peace Carl. Brian

Dear Rob Very sad news about Carl Wayne, I wish to place on the record my sincere condolences, not only to Carl's family but to Helen MacDonald, who has lost not only her Idol, but a friend. Although I chose not to follow the group after Allan Clarke's departure, Carl's work both as a solo artist and with the Move have always been a source of inspiration to me. It is also sad that the Hollies lose another great singer under tragic circumstances.
